Brieft history of human society
Two persons of same religion, completely stranger to each other can fit into a society because they believe in common myths, religion, God. The people of different religion can do the same because they believe in state, nation. And two people from different countries and religion might risk their lives for each other because we all believe in Humanity.
We have seen lions, tigers living in a group of around 10 members. Wolves, foxes live in a tribe of 30-50. Chimpanzees, our nearest descendants, can live in a group of, maybe, 100. This is the limit for animals for the earth to live together harmoniously, to form a "society" of their own kind. Even Homo Sapiens, i.e. us, according to the studies, could hardly form an extended society of more than 150 members. Wait a minute, but nowadays we see, nay, live in a society of more than hundreds of thousands, millions, Billions of people! Ohh, sweet Lord! How did that happen? What made the man so special to cross some barrier of harmonious societal limit that other animals could not and can not do? Is it our language? Is it the huge 1500 cubic-centimeter thing inside our skull?
Before that, let us discuss one special quality that man(Homo Sapien) possesses but other animals don't. Fiction and/or Imagined Reality! Yes, you heard it right. Rather than going in the depth, I would prefer rudimentary knowledge about it. The man has a special gift of communication, but so does other animals. What makes our communication skills unique is our ability to speak about the things that don't exist. For example, chimpanzees can announce the site of a lion. On the other hand, humans can actually imagine or fantasize and describe his appearance even if they haven't seen the lion. Former depicts objective reality, which IS there, it physically exists, while later is a case of imagined reality. The example telltales just a tip of the iceberg.
"Superpower" like this led to the origination of myths and beliefs. Different tribes started to form their own myths, beliefs, gods and religions. Foragers started to believe in myths and leader started to mend them, leading to the strengthening of the leader's position in the tribe. Though this evolution did not occur simultaneously and impromptu among all the human tribes, those having strong beliefs in their myths happened to form indestructible bonds and unimaginable coordination among members. Undoubtedly, later group started to gain power wherever they went. Inevitably, the affected tribe either had to merge with them or face the unfathomable consequences. Agricultural Revolution boosted this trait, as it buttressed the idea of large societies, which provided a better quality of life, security and stability.
As time passed, different myths, religions, gods formed their places in people's heart. Along with this, the idea of justice, liberty, human rights, state, nation fortified among people. As we see today, in the modern era, even though people don't believe in god or religion, they believe at least one of the above. This is what keeps us together, this is the glue holding this huge mess of society together.
Some might argue that the brain is the prime reason behind this. I am not denying this, at least not completely. See there were at least six human species living on the face of the earth before homo sapiens, with a little difference in genes and body, even in the brain. Our species triumphed over them and probably eradicated because of the sheer coordination and imagination power.
Without imagined reality, people can't live together in large groups for a long time, because what's there to stop them from killing each other? Belief and faith, part of imagined reality, are keeping the society intact. We believe in a particular order not because it is objectively true, but because believing in it enables us to cooperate effectively and forge a better society. Without it, there won't be any harmony among sapiens.
